  PLEASE READ IF YOU HAVE BEEN CALLED AS A JUROR:

  1. Please complete your juror questionnaire before reporting for jury duty.
  2. Appropriate attire is required. (no shorts, muscle shirts, “message” t shirts)
  3. All persons entering the building are subject to a metal detection screening and search
  4. There is free public parking om the corner of South Oak Street and East Winkler Street.
     

   

  JURY INFORMATION:

  1. Anyone who has an inability to comprehend or communicate in the English language, or has a physical or mental impairment that makes it impossible or very difficult for the person to serve on a jury may request a permanent exemption.
  2. When requesting a permanent exemption for medical reasons, a statement from your physician must accompany the Affidavit of Exemption.
  3. Permanent Exemption Applications can be emailed to geneva.baker@co.winkler.tx.us or mailed to P.O. Box 1065, Kermit, TX 79745.
     
     

  PETIT JURY EXEMPTIONS

  1. You are over the age of 75 years of age.
  2. You have legal custody of a child or children younger than 12 years of age and service on the jury would require leaving the child or children without adequate supervision.
  3. You are a student at a public or private high school.
  4. You are enrolled in actual attendance at an institution of higher education.
  5. You are an officer or an employee of the senate, the house of representatives. Or any department, commission, board, office, or other agency in the legislative branch of state government.
  6. You are the primary caretaker of a person who is unable to care for himself or herself. (This exemption does not apply to you if you are a primary caretaker only in your capacity as a health care worker.)
  7. You are a member of the United Sates military forces serving on active duty and deployed to a location away from your home station and out of your county of residence.

  PETIT JURY DISQUALIFICATIONS

  1. Be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Be a citizen of the United States.
  3. Be a resident of this state and a resident of the county in which you are to serve as a juror.
  4. Be qualified under the Constitution and laws to vote in the county in which you are to serve as a juror (Note: You do not have to be registered to vote to be qualified to vote).
  5. Be of sound mind and good moral character.
  6. Be able to read and write.
  7. Not have served as a juror for six days during the preceding three months in a county court or during the preceding six months in a district court: and
  8. Not have been convicted of, or be under indictment or other legal accusation for, misdemeanor theft or a felony.

   

  GRAND JURY EXEMPTIONS

  1. You are over 70 years of age.
  2. You are responsible for the care of a child younger than 18 years of age.
  3. You are a student at a public or private high school.
  4. You are enrolled in actual attendance at an institution of higher education.

  • NOTE: THE COURT ALSO MAY DETERMINE IF A PERSON HAS A REASONABLE EXCUSE FROM SERVICE OTHER THAN THOSE LISTED ABOVE.

  GRAND JURY QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Be a citizen of this state and the county in which you are to serve as a grand juror.
  2. Be qualified under the Constitution and laws to vote in the county in which you are to serve as a grand juror. (Note: you do not have to be registered to vote to be qualified to vote.)
  3. Be of sound mind and good moral character
  4. Be able to read and write.
  5. Not have been convicted of or be under indictment or other legal accusation for, misdemeanor theft or a felony.
  6. Not be related with in the third degree of consanguinity or second degree of affinity, as determined under Chapter 573, government code, to any person selected to serve or serving on the same grand jury.
  7. Not have served as a grand juror in the year before the date on which the term of court for which the person has been selected as grand juror begins; and
  8. Not be a complainant in any matter to be heard by the grand jury during the term of court for which the person has been selected as a grand juror.
