WINKLER COUNTY SENIOR CITIZENS
RECREATION CENTER

 

History
 

July 10, 1976 Winkler County Commissioners court met to discuss the possibility of a senior citizens center. Present was Wink Mayor James A. Winn, Kermit Mayor G.L. (Jerry) McGuire, Chester Ahrens (Kermit Jaycees), Whitney Herr (Manager of Kermit chamber of commerce), Bill Smith (Permian basin regional planning commission), councilman Fred Pearson, Commissioner's Henry Jones, D. Leon Nutt, Christine Mills, and Weldon Wright as well as Joe Shepard, County Judge E.C. Locklear County Auditor Paul .D. Lassiter, Frank A,. Williams, Thomas J. Smith, Mrs. Tom Marion and President of the Winkler County Senior Citizens Association. Plans where made to have the center in operation soon after January 1, 1977. The building contract was set with S.V. (Shirley) Smith.

Ground breaking ceremony was held December 17, 1976 and opened August 18, 1977 with Dixie Atwood as director. Donations where all excepted from the community. Classes were organized such as Art, Macramé, Liquid Embroidery, Quilting, and wood work.

County Judge E. C. Locklear reported a new 1977 Dodge Van had been purchased for use of the center. The van was to be used for transportation of the senior citizens of Winkler County for groceries, trips to drug store, and doctors office visits as well as to the center.

Kermit Garden club planted a tree every year on the premises.

   
Activities
 
November 1977 two pool, shuffleboard 42, dominoes, and canasta tournaments were held as well as Thanksgiving dinner. Food was provided by different organizations and the community. Each year these same type of activities are held for Thanksgiving and Christmas for the senior citizens of Winkler County.

Birthday parties
Open House - each year on the anniversary the center opens it doors to display the different crafts made throughout the year. The board of directors selects an Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year with a plaque being presented at the open house.
