The District Attorney is responsible for prosecuting felony criminal offenses that are committed in Winker County. A felony means any offense that is punishable by a sentence of death or confinement in prison or state jail. Such offenses include murder, robbery, sexual assault, burglary and major drug and theft offenses. [Misdemeanor offenses generally are prosecuted by the County Attorney.] Victims of violent crime in Texas have various rights under the Texas Constitution. The District Attorney's Office employs a Victim/Witness Coordinator to contact victims and witnesses and coordinate the services that are available for them. The Coordinator informs victims and witnesses about the case, obtains information that is used during the prosecution, assists in the application for compensation, and ensures fair treatment through the criminal justice process.
